Sweet science satisfies me - BY JOE SCHWARCZ, FREELANCE

"A craving for sweetness may actually be a craving for calories, and since artificial sweeteners deliver the sweetness but not the calories, they leave the consumer looking for a calorie fix."
...
The possibility that the brain can somehow subconsciously detect calories while food is still in the mouth is backed up by a study of stationary bikers who were asked to rinse their mouths with either a solution of glucose or one of saccharin, without swallowing. Amazingly, the glucose solution improved performance,

The most popular target of the anti-aspartame crusaders is methanol, one of the products of aspartame metabolism. Indeed, methanol is released when aspartame is broken down in the body, and methanol can produce some nasty effects including visual disturbances. It is also true that methanol is further metabolized into formaldehyde, a recognized carcinogen. But numbers matter! A banana or a glass of tomato juice contains far more methanol, naturally occurring, than that produced from a serving of a diet beverage. The methanol argument is just not plausible.

Running from 5k to 10K

What comes after the Couch to 5k plan? Well, the 5k to 10k plan it seems. Actually, I would be very happy to run 5k under 30 minutes consistently.

Whey Protein Isolate Sources in Canada

The products are about the same if your Protein is above 25g per 30g serving. Just price on protein not on servings. Some go as high as 27g per 30g others as low as 23g per 30g, it makes a big difference. I buy mine at Loblaws and Walmart.

I currently buy Body Fortress Whey Protein Isolate (vanilla flavoured) at Walmart at about $40 for 5 pounds.

It delivers about 100 calories for 25 grams of protein, this cuts my appetite but gives me energy. My daily maximum is about 50 grams. For Breakfast I put a few bits of oatmeal or muselix on it as well as a tablespoon of yoghurt and a quarter sliced banana and a lot (1 teaspoon) of cinnamon for sweetener. Some mornings I have a small slice of toast on the side to build up the meal. Then I'm good till break where I have a small apple. And so on. I blogged this topic here:

Here are some suggestions from others:

Costco from my experience sells the cheapest protein, it's not optimum
nutrition though, but it's simliar, pure whey isolate.
As for canadian websites that sell protein powder, those can be relatively
expensive as well, some buy supplements from BB.Comhttp://www.bodybuilding.com/store/ Even with shipping it is
very cheap.

Now if you want a Canadian site, you can try one of these

What comes after the 5 km run?

So the couch to 5k plan is over, what comes next? I feel great knowing I'm in good shape; staying that way means continuing with the 5k per 2 day regimen. It's not really painful, my next goal will be to consistently run 5km in 30 minutes. Generally the consensus for my level is to slowly increase distance 10% per week while increasing speed with the Fartlek method. I'll see about that 10% increase, for now, consistency will be my objective. Steve

Fun with Fartlek
As fun to run as it is to say, a fartlek workout is a kind of informal interval session and a great way to incorporate speedwork into your routine when you want a change from the track. "Fartlek" is Swedish for "speed play" and consists of bursts of speed in the middle of a training run. After warming up, run at an easy training pace, throwing in bursts of speed for various distances throughout the run. Vary the speed and times of the speed sections, from as short as 15 seconds to as long as two or three minutes. Between these bursts, allow yourself enough recovery time to match roughly 2/3 of the effort time. The recovery pace, though, should be faster than the recovery jog you might do during intervals on the track; keep it moving at an easy training pace. source: Cool Running :: Training

Steve runs 10 km marathon for Hopital Juif de Readaptation in Laval.

I did it, 10 km in one hour 12 minutes. The second half was slower since I took 2 short breaks to walk and rest. I was last, but I did it; bad posture and all.

The race ran right past our house so Ginette, her mother and aunt were cheering me on from the balcony, so were several of my neighbours. That was very funny!

The couch to 5k program is working for me. I just finished the 27 days and run 4 to 5 km every other day, so 10 km is quite a stretch for me, I will see how I feel tomorrow. One of my great moments this morning? Asking for a small Tshirt. I ran into a few old pros with killer bodies and running schedules to match, not my style.
