Design outside your silo

Good services come from thinking outside your silo, (we used to say outside the box).
Source Total Experience Design :: Sessions :: Microsoft MIX10

Examples from the conference:
Sometimes doing what you don't have to can GREATLY IMPROVE the user experience.
  • Taxis with Iphone chargers in the backseat.
  • Nike+ ads that talk about what you do with your "good looking body" instead of the sneakers.
  • Neff oven repair, seamless information from the client, the website (listed the ovens' serial number), to sales pitching an accessory, to support requesting the serial number and the technician fixing the stove (texting his arrival, bringing the parts and the accessory "just in case").

Quotes:
  • Only a total experience designer would have dared think .... to create an experience as seamless as Neff's.
  • Find the cracks down which their experience would fall... uncover opportunities nobody else does.

Youtube Video Tenets for any Web Site

Looking back at those early days, we were committed to some basic principles that have since become fundamental tenets in the world of online video:

  • Speed matters: Videos should load and play back quickly.
  • Clip culture is here to stay: Short clips are voraciously consumed and perfect for watching a wide variety of content.
  • Open platforms open up possibility: Content creation isn't our business; it's yours. We wanted to create a place where anyone with a video camera, a computer, and an Internet connection could share their life, art, and voice with the world, and in many cases make a living from doing so.

Drawing visitors to your website

  1. How to make sure search-engine users find your Web site
Use Word Clouds to Link Internally
Michael Fleischner says that he's seen clients achieve great success in getting word out about their content by using OnlyWire.com, which lets you automatically submit a page of content to more than 20 social bookmarking sites with a single click.
Unless you give visitors a compelling reason to link to your pages, you won't get these links and you won't rise up in the search rankings--no matter how frequently your keywords appears on your home page. Write provocative blog posts

Book review - Introduction to Web design using Microsoft FrontPage

Glencoe Online Computer web_design
It is an excellent introduction to all facets of web design. It starts with an overview of the Internet then planning your site and eventually to execution of the plan and testing. I consider it an encyclopedia of web design since it presents an overview of many topics with occasional more in depth activities. It is not designed for Individualized instruction, since most pages assume classroom activities. Steve. Thank you Gracelyn.

How to assemble a free website

Using Google.com free services to create a website is a solid solution for any person or group, the following servers mesh together to form a large multi contributor system that is safe and easy to maintain. Your domain can now point to it directly.
If you are working in multiple languages, start one blog per language and give permission to the writers and administrators for that language only. Cross link the blogs to each other in the blog links tool.
  1. The site: Perfect for a basic site blogger.com/ allows multiple administrators, multiple authors. Easy to change colour templates and the layout of the buttons and tools. Samples: Beautiful: lucmorrisseau.blogspot.com
    Français: http://hispanolaval.blogspot.com/
    Español: http://hispanolaval2.blogspot.com/
vox.com has more features but will require separate logon. TypePad is not free but has no ads.
Yahoo 360 The service's editor lacks the ability to post audio and video clips,
Windows Live Spaces is fine if you don't need high-end features. Its basic editor lets you add photos and embed videos, but you can't upload videos directly from your computer.
The WordPress service provides handy editing tools, including a word counter, and the option to open links in a separate window.
  2. The pictures: http://picasaweb.google.com/ perfect for 1GB of photos. It creates code to paste into the Blog to show slide shows, embedded photos in the blog.
  3. Music Player: for MP3
    http://artmango.blogspot.com/2007/05/embed-audio-in-blogspot.html
Store your music/sounds in MP3 format online. Create a free account at:
    http://www.archive.org/account/login.createaccount.php
  4. Video player: youtube.com video.google.com
YouTube Remixer. Your original videos remain unchanged, but the edited versions appear on YouTube. Star in Your Own Video
  5. Social Network
  6. Events Calendar: The agenda format is great http://calendar.google.com/ allows multiple administrators to spread the workload. Allows repeat events. Users can scroll to past and future events if they wish. Individuals can then add their personal calendars and merge them. Even synchronize with Outlook!
  7. Special layout pages: For full control over a page, popup pages, lists, summary sheets, upcomming events calendars, etc. http://pages.google.com/ each author can open a new page, copy from word etc. and paste it retains formatting for tables. Creates a no publicity page. Sadly, only one author only per page group no sharing. Much better looking than http://docs.google.com/ if you can do without shared authorship.
    Sample: http://sitivi.googlepages.com/home
  8. Document storage and group editing of text, spreadsheets, slide shows. The very cool http://docs.google.com/ has limited layout tools (not easy to control tables in word processing mode) but amazing shared work options. Can be used as a for public documents in the website from time to time, but always displays editing tools to the public reader.
    Sample: http://docs.google.com/View?docid=dk7gw3v_0gvv357
  9. Mailing lists: http://groups.google.com/ is ok for lists but hard for beginners to understand. could be used for lists but it's a big leap for outlook users who mail to their contact list.
LiveJournal is designed as a community tool rather than a standard blogging service. For instance, you can join user-created groups and text-message other LiveJournal members. The free Plus service provides 1GB of photo storage.
  10. Statistics: use Google Analytics http://www.google.com/analytics/
Will track multiple domains under one counter!
Exclude yourself from the stats http://www.google.com/analytics/home/admin?rid=795718&vid=1201&scid=3746882 using your IP adress What is my IP?
  11. RSS. Feed Rinse: This freebie lets you enter your RSS subscription URLs singly, or you can import your OPML (Outline Processor Markup Language) file to add them all at once. Then you set up rules for each feed (to block posts that contain a certain objectionable topic or word, for example).
  12. Music publishing
  13. Domain name. If you are running a server on your own PC, use a free DOMAIN to IP redirection service such as DynDNS. Idealy you should use external free hosting and not waste your time running your own web server, unless you really want to learn the technology involved.

Website resources that are not free, but may be worth paying for

Storage

  1. Cheap online storage at AMAZON http://www.streampad.com/blog/?cat=16
Website / ecommerce compiled by pcworld.ca/
  1. The Homestead hosting service has a great tool kit for building a professional site, from $20 a month, plus a $25 setup fee (skip the "Starter" package, which is too limited to be useful).
  2. Yahoo Small Business: start at $9 a month, fewer tools than homestead. Constructing an e-commerce site is easy, and you get plenty of tips to help your site succeed.
  3. Google Custom Search is a free, Google-hosted search window that you place on your business's site. You choose the pages that are searched when your visitors enter a query. For professional sites, the fee-based Business Edition is worth the cost (rates start at $100 a year). Business Edition removes the Google logo from the search window and Google ads from the search results, while adding more tools and support.
  4. The Microsoft Small Business Center supplies free technical support for the company's popular business-oriented apps, including Windows XP Professional, Live Meeting, and Small Business Accounting. The Startup Center provides advice for entrepreneurs as well as an eclectic mix of business essays, such as the always-popular "5 rules for on-the-job romance."
  5. The EarthLink Business Resource Center provides Web hosting, e-commerce, and other business services. Its Traffic Builder optimizes ad copy and search terms to boost your visibility on search sites.
  6. Find and bill for images that have been copied from your website. ideeinc.com video

FRAMES - poorly documented frameset properties

Noresize :
Means the user doesn’t get a pointer to resize the window (but the browser may redimension it if nessary)

Resizable = “no”
Means it cannot change size under any circumstances. http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms536652.aspx

Use both if you mean both. In this example: http://hispanolaval.com/test_cadre_fr.htm the top frame is always the same height regardless of window size and displays no resize tool.
