Caption Control in Microsoft Word - The definitive technique

When to use caption commands   teachers/how-to/Pages/insert-caption (video)

With the caption commands, you can automatically insert labels, such as Figure 1 or Table 1. Word 2007 keeps track of the numbering. For convenience, you can also enable AutoCaption (which automatically inserts a caption when you add a picture or table). You can also quickly insert a table of all the figures in your document, or add a text box over a picture so that the caption and picture can be moved together.

Desktop Publishing in Microsoft Word 2007

This handout covers many of the finer theoretical points of DTP in Word 2007.

Do Desktop Publishing With Word

While Microsoft Word is still first and foremost a word processor, it is frequently used to create publications normally created by page layout programs. For some users, it may be the only desktop publishing tool they need. Designers may cringe at the thought of designing in a word processor, but within reason it is possible.

Don't Do Desktop Publishing With Word

Microsoft Word is able to create complex layouts for brochures or newsletters that print great to your desktop printer but it is not a true desktop publishing program. More significantly, Microsoft Word is not designed for creating digital files for commercial printing.

How to copy Word Tables into Excel spreadsheets

It doesn't take long to discover that copy and paste is useless since every paragraph or line feed in the table becomes a row in Excel.

To prevent this behaviour replace all the "paragraph marks" and "line breaks" with "$$$$"; copy and paste your table normally to Excel then  replace the $$$$ by the ALT+Enter line feeds.  Presto!

Here is how:
  1. In most versions of Word search and replace click More / Special / "paragraph mark".
  2. Click in the replace box and type $$$$.
  3. Click Replace All.
  4. Repeat to replace "manual line break" with $$$$.
  5. Select the table or cells and choose Copy (or CTRL+C).
  6. Switch to Excel.
  7. Click on the top left cell where the table will be pasted.
  8. Choose Paste (or CTRL+V)
Warning: if you want your text to look like the rest of the Excel document, remove the formatting by using Paste Special / Unicode Text.
  9. Search and replace the $$$$ by CTRL+j *
  10. Admire your Excel document, the text is in the same location as it was in the original Word table.
Warning: if you use hyperlinks in your word text, make each is alone in a cell because because that is how Excel needs them.

Restrict duplicate data using Excel Validation

This is a nice little trick that shows how to adapt of Excel.
To apply a validation rule that restricts input values to only unique values, do the following:

  1. Select A2:A8 (the cells you’re applying the rule to).
  2. Choose Validation from the Data menu and click the Settings tab. In Excel 2007/2010, click the Data tab and choose Data Validation from the Data Validation dropdown in the Data Tools group.
  3. Choose Custom from the Allow dropdown list.
  4. The Custom option requires a formula that returns True or False. In the Formula field, enter the following expression: =COUNTIF($A$2:$A$8,A2)=1.

  • Click and press Backspace to delete the entire table and its contents (in Page Layout view in Word 2007 and 2010 ).

Using Open Office Documents in Word 2003 and 2007

for office 2003 users

If you have Office 2003, Download and install the Sun ODF Plugin should just work. You can download the Sun ODF Plugin from here

For office 2007 users

  1. First you need to Install Service Pack 1 for Office 2007.
  2. Install Sun ODF Plugin for Microsoft Office.
  3. Open ODT document via File > Open, or by double-clicking the ODT file and when prompted for the application to open it with, choose Word.

If you don’t have administrator privileges to install software, you can try an online converter such as Zamzar or Media Convert. You can also upload ODT documents to Google Docs orZoho Writer.

If you want to open ODT documents locally but want to stay away from MS Office, try the lightweight, cross-platform Abiword or the full-blown suite of OpenOffice.org.

Windows Live Sync vs. Live Mesh vs. SkyDrive: Which is Right for You?

As usual, MS product bloat leaves me feeling a little woozy.

  • Live Mesh is the most complete. Everything that Windows Live Sync has to offer plus two extra features – cloud storage and remote desktop (with support for copy-paste).
  • Windows Live Sync Live Sync also lets you remotely access your files on the hard drive. ...sync files and folders across different computers. You can synchronize up to 20 folders containing up to 20,000 files each. Individual files cannot be larger than 4 GB in size.
  • Windows Live SkyDrive requires no installation and you get 25 GB of free storage space though the maximum size of an individual file / document cannot exceed 50 MB.
...As expected, each of these Live services do have some overlapping
features. Live Skydrive is for online storage, Live Sync is primarily for folder
synchronization across computers (no storage) while Live Mesh offers a good mix
of both though with limited storage space(5GB). Therefore my suggestion would be
to go with SkyDrive as well as Live Mesh – you’ll get plenty of storage space
plus remote desktop plus you can access important files from any other computer. Here is the full answer.

...Windows Office Live Workspace also support documents created in
OpenOffice and StarOffice to create greater compatibility on their services. source

More on tests of Office Live Workspace

This could be the best solution, for shared file storage and editing if your documents are in MS Office format.

BULK UPLOAD in IE with Silverlight only. video
Office Live Workspace has a bulk uploader tool that lets you upload multiple files (documents, images, PDFs) from the local computer to your online Office Live account.
This is quite similar to the Flickr Bulk Uploader but a reason why most of us are unaware of this useful feature is because it is available only inside Internet Explorer, not Firefox.

Can I access MOLW from my desktop? NO.

Microsoft Office Live Workspace is a secure and online website. You can try to save the default URL of the website in Book Mark, but I want to inform you that there is no way to access the account (with complete features) directly from the Desktop.
You can open your documents (created by your own ID) from your Microsoft Office applications using Open from Office Live option. However, you won’t be able to access shared folders or other lists from the desktop. To get full access to your account, you need to sign in to your account from browser.
