Using Gmail, Calendar and Docs without an Internet connection

Not willing to pay for expensive 3G service, I'm delighted at the arrival of the "New Google Gears"; the simple interface is fine since I only need ti to capture quick reminders, notes from an impromptu meeting, lists when I wake up 3 AM. : )

I feel freed from the black hole of Windows File Management where many of my best ideas never return to the surface. With Google Docs, Gmail and Calendar, it's never about WHERE is my information only WHAT.

Hey Google, how about a search window for all Google apps in one shot? A Dogpile for my Google account. It would return anything I have even if I forget whether it was an Email, Calendar appointment or a Docs document.
Using Gmail, Calendar and Docs without an Internet connection - Official Gmail Blog: Gmail offline will be available today, and offline for Google Calendar and Google Docs will be rolling out over the next week, starting today.

Gmail Offline is a Chrome Web Store app that’s intended for situations when you need to read, respond to, organize and archive email without an internet connection. This HTML5-powered app is based on the Gmail web app for tablets, which was built to function with or without web access. After you install the Gmail Offline app from the Chrome Web Store, you can continue using Gmail when you lose your connection by clicking the Gmail Offline icon on Chrome’s “new tab” page.

Linked phone numbers in Gmail phone dialer.

This is so cool, it just works of course. Click the number in a web page and presto the dialer pops up. Steve.
With the ability to call phones built right into Gmail, you no longer have to get out your phone and retype a number anytime someone sends you one in an email or chat message. Starting today, you’ll see that phone numbers appear as links, like this:
Just click the number, and Gmail’s dialpad will pop up, already populated with the number
you’re trying to call.

Turn off Gmail’s conversation view

Personally, I don't know why I would, but you can now get Gmail served up sans conversation view. Go to the main Settings page, look for the “Conversation View” section, select the option to turn it off, and save changes. If you change your mind, you can always go back.

Do they really have to refuse a free email service?

Just because Google scans your email to post ads next to them? It's all fair  if you are an individual looking for free email, it's pretty illegal if you are an institution it seems. With all that money involved, I expect compromise will prevail.

How to Really encrypt your Gmail.

What are the secret ingredients to a secure Gmail? A triumvirate of freeware comprised of Gnu Privacy Guard encryption, Mozilla's Thunderbird e-mail application (Windows|Mac), and an e-mail encryption plug-in calledEnigmail (Windows and Mac).

Switching from open to encrypted e-mail isn't a light undertaking, and as Stephen points out, there are plenty of drawbacks and trade-offs when you swap ease-of-use for near-total privacy.
