Caption Control in Microsoft Word - The definitive technique

When to use caption commands   teachers/how-to/Pages/insert-caption (video)

With the caption commands, you can automatically insert labels, such as Figure 1 or Table 1. Word 2007 keeps track of the numbering. For convenience, you can also enable AutoCaption (which automatically inserts a caption when you add a picture or table). You can also quickly insert a table of all the figures in your document, or add a text box over a picture so that the caption and picture can be moved together.

Way too much detail about keeping captions with pictues: keep-with-caption

Inserting the current Monday's date in a Word document

A less boring macro for Word. OK, it isn't so exiting, but it might be an interesting lesson for someone studying macros. Steve

How to copy Word Tables into Excel spreadsheets

It doesn't take long to discover that copy and paste is useless since every paragraph or line feed in the table becomes a row in Excel.

To prevent this behaviour replace all the "paragraph marks" and "line breaks" with "$$$$"; copy and paste your table normally to Excel then  replace the $$$$ by the ALT+Enter line feeds.  Presto!

Here is how:
  1. In most versions of Word search and replace click More / Special / "paragraph mark".
  2. Click in the replace box and type $$$$.
  3. Click Replace All.
  4. Repeat to replace "manual line break" with $$$$.
  5. Select the table or cells and choose Copy (or CTRL+C).
  6. Switch to Excel.
  7. Click on the top left cell where the table will be pasted.
  8. Choose Paste (or CTRL+V)
Warning: if you want your text to look like the rest of the Excel document, remove the formatting by using Paste Special / Unicode Text.
  9. Search and replace the $$$$ by CTRL+j *
  10. Admire your Excel document, the text is in the same location as it was in the original Word table.
Warning: if you use hyperlinks in your word text, make each is alone in a cell because because that is how Excel needs them.

Office Add-in for Moodle

I'm still trying to get exited over using Moodle; but it all seems like a lot of work. Maybe this tool will make my life easier. Steve.
"Uploading files to Moodle has never been easier. The Office Add-in for Moodle (OAM) is an add-in for Microsoft Office (versions 2003, 2007 and 2010) that allows teachers to open and save Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents to a Moodle website.
Today, teachers who use Office and Moodle have to switch back and forth between their web browser and Office applications. With the OAM, teachers can create, open, edit, and save Moodle documents from within the Office applications. You no longer need to use your web browser when working with Office documents stored in Moodle." Office Add-in for Moodle

Some useful comments about Office 2010

Ok, it sounds like office 2010 is 2007 finished. Source: Office 2010: a deeper dive
Much of the work in Office 2010 is cleanup and polishing, smoothing over rough edges, making common features work the same across apps, improving performance. In some striking ways, Office 2010 is to its predecessor as Windows 7 is to Windows Vista. And that’s not a bad thing.
