Free Montreal 438 cell phone number. I'm impressed!

I'm so excited, it is finally here. A true FREE Cell Phone over DATA provider, now, if you have an Android or iPhone with data plan your incomming and outgoing calls are virtually free. This is going to rock the Montreal cell phone market.

Get a Free Montreal 438 cell phone number for your Android or iPhone. Receive and make calls immediately. The dialer connects and dials very quickly, the voice quality is not as good as Skype but very usable. Unlike Skype the app boots very quickly, imperceptibly.

Long distance rates are ok, much like skype's but they have no north american calling area plans. Some canadian cities are in the free calling area.

Two steps:
  1. Just create a free account at form your PC at:  http://www.dellvoice.ca/
  2. Install the free Dell Voice Android app or iPhone app on your phone and login.
Call anytime.

Data cost:
  • 1 minute of talk uses up about 1 MB of the data plan, so a 512 MB per month plan is talk all you want more or less.
  • On a $30 per month 512 MB data plan, one minute uses 5.8 cents of data.
  • On a $50 per month 6 GB data plan, one minute uses .8 cents of data.
Plus side:
  • Free Montreal number
  • Free Caller ID
  • Free Voice Messaging
  • Free 3 number follow me
  • Free calls to major canadian cities
  • Integrated with my Gmail contact list now updates, just press Contacts. YAY.
Down side:
  • Voice messages are retrieved "old style" press 7 to delete...

Free Canadian Phone Numbers with Follow Me, Voicemail, 911. Montreal too.

It's true, it works. Free Montreal phone numbers are still available, use it to call out from your PC, receive calls from your friends to a free 514 number (it rings on your PC or cell or takes a voice message). This is a CLEC and so you can even move your current number to them. I haven't had the guts to stop paying for phone service yet, but I will soon.

A Free Canadian phone numbers, at last - Bud Phone

It works, I've been running it for a few days, my friends have been running it for months, they have been in business for 10 years. They convinced Labatt's to put their name on it, that was probably not easy.

So, download it, pick a number, you are done. Free Number, VoiceMail, Caller ID, Forwarding. If you call all over North America you might prefer magicJack it isn't free but the adapter is cheaper but the calls are unlimited ($39 + $19.95 per year).

On the Bud Phone calls from your PC outside the Montreal calling area cost 2 cents per minute. Thanks Ron. Thanks Bertrand. Steve.

I plan to use it so my friends can call me at a 514 number in Montreal, and it will ring on my PC during my trip. Of course, when the PC is off, it will take a message and send it to my email account. Nice.

I also plan to shut down my regular phone once I have tested their ATA for $99.99, because I can plug my regular phones on it and they offer number portability. More to follow on this topic.

Linked phone numbers in Gmail phone dialer.

This is so cool, it just works of course. Click the number in a web page and presto the dialer pops up. Steve.
With the ability to call phones built right into Gmail, you no longer have to get out your phone and retype a number anytime someone sends you one in an email or chat message. Starting today, you’ll see that phone numbers appear as links, like this:
Just click the number, and Gmail’s dialpad will pop up, already populated with the number
you’re trying to call.

Instant Voice Messaging - The World Wide Walkie Talkie.

Finally you can really talk for Free with this very cool Walkie Talkie style App. (Android and iPhone). It is another reason not to have a large Cell Phone plan since this "radio via Internet" calls any Android or iPhone around the world without touching your Cell Minutes! It removes most of the "friction" involved in placing a call. The demo is light hearted and will make cell phone operators nervous.

The Phone Call Is Dead - eventually

This article takes the extreme position  of a technical person. But then again, I'm not 20, nor do I have access to corporate paid mobile services. Steve
"Less obsolete but more annoying than a handwritten letter, the phone call is fading as a mode of communication even if the nostalgic will be singing its praises for awhile. We reached a breaking point in 2008 when text messaging topped mobile phone calling in usage, and we’ve been living in a world dominated by text based communication ever since (Thanks Twitter)."
...
Interest in voice calling is now sharply differentiated by age, and few technological advancements have ever survived while failing to capture the interest of 22 year olds. ...
(One thing a phone call does signify is EMERGENCY)....
The other day somebody from my bank called me to talk about my 401K. Fair enough....
...(The) Bank should have sent me an EMAIL about the fact that it noticed I had more money in my account, with a link directing me to my 401K option plan. There I could decide BY READING and not listening to some customer service rep’s scripted drivel on what plan was right for me. Now, as it stands, I’ve got a random phone number in my Stickies that I will never call back.

20 iPad competitors for the holiday season

There will be something for every pocket book. It isn't so much what is included, as what is left out in each model. My unlikely idea? A 7 inch cell phone with bluetooth, since I'm never without my bag, size doesn't matter. It had better have cameras, mikes, run skype, etc. Negroponte on tablets. Steve

Facebook's phone: Will it actually sell? | ZDNet

Facebook's phone: Will it actually sell? | ZDNet: "The enthusiasm around the Facebook phone is partially based on numbers. Facebook has 500 million users. If it sells phones to 10 percent of its base, that’s 50 million phones. Facebook is a slam dunk on a phone! Well, not really."

Google Voice is added to Gmail

It just works. This is great and 2 cents per minute in most countries outside the free zone (US and Canada). Click here to try: gmail.com/call
Google Voice is added to Gmail; Boosts exposure but still falls short in other areas | ZDNet: "The service is free and calls to the phones in the U.S. and Canada are free, at least through the end of the year. The company said it has no plans to start charging for calls to the U.S. and Canada but was clear that some of that is dependent on making some money on international calls."

High Definition Voice Over IP

HD Voice uses the Wideband Adaptive Multi-Rate speech codec, using bandwidth between 50 Hz and 7000 Hz compared to the current narrowband speech codec which uses 300 Hz to 3400 Hz.
Some have argued that consumers have taken to VoIP services, despite some occasional quality issues, because they had been so widely accustomed to mobile voice audio quality, objectively and not only subjectively worse than landline quality. The Orange enhancement at least potentially could have positive impact, but in the opposite direction, making mobile voice audio quality objectively and subjectively better than either legacy mobile voice or landline voice using the public switched network.
“HD Voice really does inject a level of innovation into mobile phone calls, making it sound as if callers are actually in the same room,' Tom Alexander, Orange UK CEO, said. 'Once people have tried it, they won’t want to go back.”

Voip Technology About to Take over the Mobile Business

YAY! I want to use Skype on a 3G network. Now with true statistics; this works out to .135 cents per minute (yes that's 8 cents per hour!) in raw data transfer. When are we going to ditch that cell phone?
According to In-Stat, though a mobile VoIP plan, one could talk for roughly 22,222 minutes before exceeding a $30, 5-gigabyte mobile data cap.
Meanwhile, mobile operators charge as much as 45 cents per minute for mobile voice – a rate which goes down only when subscribers opt for voice-usage plans. While using more than 20,000 minutes per month isn’t realistic, In-Stat analysts say the example points to the fact that mobile VoIP offers the potential for unlimited voice calls for far less than traditional mobile voice plans.

This call back server works on cells and land lines. Any feedback?
I still like Yak in a pinch, but it's more expensive.

Communicate with all services from one point

In a fragmented world of Internet Communities, this service would provide the user with a single access point. It looks promissing. I am trying it out.
This service allows you to connect to many phone, messaging, chat services with a single login, looks interesting. http://www.nimbuzz.com/en/pc/

Nimbuzz Mobile application is currently available for more than 1000 handsets that operate on Java, Symbian, Windows Mobile, iPhone O.S[3], Android OS[4], and on more than 20 Blackberry models. The mobile application offers 3 types of calling options: Dial-Up VoIP, VoIP and SIP. Source.

Finally a Skype phone number in Montreal for 5.95 per month via Jetnumbers.com

A montreal number works: JetNumbers in Montreal? - Skype Community
for 5.95 per month a Montreal number rings on Skype!
http://www.jetnumbers.com/buy-skype&from=Step_0
No, I wouldn't bet my 911 on it and cancel my regular phone today, but with a little testing this may be the answer for an association needing occasional, cheap phone service. Steve

Videotron's hidden product Téléphonie par Logiciel - Softphone
$ 22 per month $ 6 discount may apply. One year contract required. Not a priority at Videotron. I guess we continue to wait for a smaller player. Skype where are you? When will you offer numbers in Montreal?
