Google - Microsoft - synchronization software nobody wants?

I find it difficult to imagine my data "living" entirely on the net; with all my files up there, not on my USB, not on my hard drive. Maybe the problem is with the notion of files in the first place. Files are just containers for ideas. Could a new "containerless" cyberworld be more appropriate? What will it feel like? Where will it be?

If we are living the information equivalent of the transition to the power grid from water wheels by Thomas Edison, what will the information equivalent of Hydro Quebec in 20 years?
