    DRAMATIC RESULTS:
Within a few short months after P.S. 234 launched its policy of allowing portable computers to be signed out for overnight use, some dramatic results could be seen. For example:
    * Computer use by everyone increased; the powerbooks were almost always signed out in advance for days at a time. More people using the computers simply more interest and more knowledge.
    * There was much more integration between the computer lab and the classrooms. The computer teacher began to have a significant role in facilitating work in the classrooms.
    * Teachers began to ask the computer teacher for more help with software and hardware. There was much more interaction between staff members about technology. Even the solitary computers in classrooms were used more.
    * Some of our parents began to work with their children's classes on projects that were tied to technology.

    LESSONS LEARNED:
Here are some things P.S. 234 learned about keeping their computers secure and in working order.
    * Security is essential. Locking computers up and keeping track of them is not easy, but it has to be done. Make sure your system works. (At P.S. 234, the system had to be re-evaluated after one computer was stolen.)
    * Devise a way to transport hardware from room to room and from school to home. P.S. 234 used a cart with deep sides and lined it with bubble wrap.
    * Have a speedy system inplace for repairing broken computers.
    * No food or drink allowed near computers. P.S. 234 learned that the hard way when a staff member spilled his coffee on a computer.
