Game Changing Technologies of the Near Future

1. Sensor technology Sensor technology is a game-changer because it means any physical object -- a bridge, the loading dock at a warehouse, the clothes you wear or even your own skin -- can communicate with a network.
2. Smarter Web The idea is to more easily share complex knowledge you get from the Internet.
3. Network virtualization As an application makes a request, the network would be smart enough to meet that request with an appropriate level of storage and connectivity. Services could be housed and transmitted to and from any endpoint, not just on servers or client devices. Networks could support multiple transmission types, including corporate data, cellular traffic, voice over IP, video, audio and unified communication/telepresence. And the network would be smart enough to optimize traffic in real time.
4. Fuzzy searches Finding information when you only have a vague concept of what you want. For example, you might know that there was an important English poet in the 1950s, but you can't remember his name or what he wrote. Yahoo Correlator allows you to type in vague terms such as "English poet 1950s" and correlate information.
5. Social network integration Social networking services such as Twitter and Facebook do not share data as easily as they might -- even if stopgap measures such as Twitterfeed.com, a service that feeds your status from one social network to another, do help. Open standards such as Y!OS and OpenSocial are paving the way for data sharing between services.
6. Netbooks in the enterprise One reason that netbooks are game-changing has to do with the economic crisis; most models cost about $500 or less. They use less power, last longer than performance-oriented laptops, weigh less and work well for the most common computing tasks including word processing, e-mail and Web surfing. They may also become the new "thin client" as more companies move to cloud computing.
7. Smart grid The smart grid is coming -- and local utility companies are racing to build it. Sensors connect to networks and can show consumers and companies how power is being used in real-time. In the future, appliances could be outfitted with sensors and displays that instruct consumers how to save energy based on usage.
8. SSD RAID Solid-state drives are already an attractive option in the PC market. ...This represents a major shift in cost and performance.
9. Speech-to-text and e-mail integration Voice mail transcription is an up and comer because it shows how communication technologies are unifying -- you can listen to voice mail on the Web, forward the text of a message, hold an audioconference and record messages.
10. Open PC cases BMW designed a case for the ThermalTake PC as a prototype called Level 10 and came up with an open architecture that makes it easy to swap components. The design reduces heat buildup and just looks cool. The Antec Skeleton has a similar open design with layered trays for easy access, a massive 250mm top-mounted fan and -- at about 20 pounds fully loaded -- at least a degree of portability for LAN parties, in which gamers get together in a home or office to play games over a network.

Ipod Touch Parental Control

You can deactivate entire apps or block explicit material on the iPod Touch. So it's an all or nothing proposition. Use the SETTINGS GENERAL RESTRICTIONS type in a PIN for example: 1234 and drag EXPLICIT to OFF, SAFARI to OFF, INSTALLING to OFF. Press the button at the bottom to finish. This way everything that goes in (except YouTube) is controlled by iTunes on your PC.

To control web browsing, it's $4.99 minimum.

To control musical content, everything is managed through iTunes on the PC preferences. A cool idea until you realize any PC can control an iPod Touch.
Good luck out there.

Is Google Making Us Stupid?

This is a lot of food for thought. I agree that paper insulates me from interruptions, the temptation of clicking a link and that much focus allows clear reflective creative thinking. Rather than click a link and read someone's thought, I can take a moment and think creatively with my own ideas.

What ensures a decent lifestyle for all? Do the poor always end up with whateaver the rich see fit to let them have? Is middle class the "dirt poor" of the past? Forever doomed to cycle through accumulation and loss at the whim of current aristocracy? Do the rich grow rich through very long cycles of accumulation (10 to 100 years?) ; while the middle class cycle from one recession to the next (7-10 years)?

Thoughts about the middle path

Buddhism Theravada
Deprivation for its own sake is not valued. Indeed, it may be seen as a sign of attachment to one's own renunciation. The aim of the monastic lifestyle was to prevent concern for the material circumstances of life from intruding on the monk or nun's ability to engage in religious practice.

Google invites developers to make Web faster

Google has created a Web site for developers that is focused exclusively on making Web applications, sites and browsers faster. The site grew out of Google's decision to publicly share a set of best practices the search company has developed over the years. By offering tutorials, tips and performance tools via the new site, Google wants to help make the Web faster by assembling a community of developers interested in online speed and performance. The site will allow developers to submit ideas, suggestions and questions via a discussion forum and by using Google's Moderator tool.

Ok, circuses scare me. But I managed to sit through this one. It has very enjoyable moments, but the high flying acts are nail biters for me. So go ahead and enjoy it, we all had a good time.

I like Dansdata!

A new link has appeared in my world http://www.dansdata.com/ thanks to chat with my old friend Don. This writer takes ideas to their "illogical" conclusion. As any thinking human, he fearlessly writes about anything in his universe bringing any knowledge he has to the table and open to corrections.

Here are some of the topics that caught my eye:

Institutions can Cut Down on Computer User Frustration and Technicical Support

Institutions waste a ton of time supporting workstations. Generally speaking, everyone hates unexpected changes. Here are some solutions:

  1. Enforce Zero reconfigurations:
Deepfreeze is a very effective way to keep a public workstation from recording any changes. It can be annoying if it is not up to date, but cuts down on technical support since not one bit is changed from one boot to the next!
  2. Simplify your equipment:
Change all your workstations at the same time. That way your problems will all be the same ones. Supporting a wide variety of machines is labour intensive and, over time, costs more than the equipment. Thanks for reminding me Don.
  3. Move less information:
Stop moving paper and start documenting. Start a Wiki for support questions and help desk: source: techrepublic.com.com helpdesk
There are a lot of wikis available to try. Mediawiki is the engine behind Wikipedia, and is available for free. Again, though, you’ll probably want to have a decent systems administrator on staff to get that package going. If you want to get started on a wiki, but don’t want to worry about hosting your own, I’d recommend PBWiki. They offer a free hosted wiki solution for those who want to get their feet wet. We’re using a local TWiki installation in my office, and my colleagues are fleshing out our knowledge base with topics I couldn’t begin to address on my own. You see, I support a group of quantitative social scientists. My users are answering each other’s questions and solving some of their own problems without my intervention.
  4. Take images of your computers before users start messing them up.
  5. Store all documents (even "My Documents") on servers or in the Cloud.
  6. Move your software to "the Cloud". The PC can become a "dumb terminal" easily replaced by any other PC in the event of a breakdown.

Google Wave

A new tool on the horizon for this fall. Google seems to be trying some of Microsoft's tactics: introducing "vapourware". I don't feel good about this "wave" concept, it is technically exciting, but what team would use it? I suppose it's one more step in the deployment of full Cloud Computing.

Wolfram|Alpha search engine news

  • Wolfram|Alpha for scientific searches. It promises to improve.

Wolfram|Alpha gathers data based on your search terms and presents you with the answers in a well-formatted structure, using charts, graphs and other visual aids. For example, if you want to compare statistics about several different cities, you type in their names and find out that, say, Tokyo has several thousand more people than New York.

    What's cool about it?

If you're of a scientific bent, this could be a great resource, once Wolfram Research beefs up its informational sources. It lays out the data in easy-to-read, well-formatted pages that include a variety of charts and graphs.
    ...
However, until it aggregates a lot more data, and learns to handle more complex user queries, this interesting experiment is no danger to Google.
