Tonic sol-fa method signed by William Smith of the Tonic sol-fa College. The founder was

Toward the end of the 19th century there was a concerted effort to develop the skills of reading music, mainly under the banner of the Tonic Sol-fa methodology which had been successfully employed by John Curwen in Great Britain. Leading up to World War I, Canadian schools relied heavily upon British teachers, many of whom had received Tonic Sol-fa training in the old country.
