Every time I read this statement I wonder where the "Don’t be evil" part is. Free services are always part of a monetization plan. Imagine a day where the cost of these maintaining free services outweighs their marketing value; it will be upgrade it or loose it day. While I doubt that Google will ever reach that point, and "Don't be evil" will not make it into any contract, I think about it everytime I pull my data from some website that is shutting down it's free services (those drive.com sites, etc)
Remember free broadcast television? Now we pay for most of our TV on cable, and the last free broadcasts will soon all be digital; and digital means broadcasters can manage the viewers by region, payment plan, etc (look at Videotron Illico digital cable for a sample of that future of free TV).
Google primarily provides search and advertising services, which together aim to organize and monetize the world’s information.Source: Google Company Profile
