Why I like google docs - Why not.

I like google docs because:

  1. You can send the "invitation" before you are done writing the document!
  2. You can work on the document anytime
  3. There is only one copy on the planet. No confusion.
  4. Automatic version are kept by default
  5. Automatic backup
  6. Documents can be started privately, finished publicly
  7. When there is no Internet, it just keeps working (launched Apr 12 2008)

    Of course you can type up notes and paste them later to google docs.

I don't like google docs because:

  1. Security, the documents are only as secure as my GMail password - and if you store your password somewhere, maybe not even that secure. more...
  2. No encryption - at least not with the software provided by Google - and encryption kind of defeats the purpose of indexing and quickly finding relevant documents. more...
  3. Legal issues raised by remote storage generally. Who owns the documents? Can google be compelled to reveal the content of document?

  1. People are married to their desktops and get agitated if you rearrange or remove their icons. Google Docs doesn't give us desktop icons;
  2. Sharing is a new paradigm that has yet to gain anything close to universal acceptance and it sends shivers down the spines of many an admin assistant. No wonder Microsoft didn't go there first: they understand their users' control issues and frankly may have a better understanding of how small business networks function.
