How to assemble a free website

Using Google.com free services to create a website is a solid solution for any person or group, the following servers mesh together to form a large multi contributor system that is safe and easy to maintain. Your domain can now point to it directly.
If you are working in multiple languages, start one blog per language and give permission to the writers and administrators for that language only. Cross link the blogs to each other in the blog links tool.
  1. The site: Perfect for a basic site blogger.com/ allows multiple administrators, multiple authors. Easy to change colour templates and the layout of the buttons and tools. Samples: Beautiful: lucmorrisseau.blogspot.com
    Français: http://hispanolaval.blogspot.com/
    Español: http://hispanolaval2.blogspot.com/
vox.com has more features but will require separate logon. TypePad is not free but has no ads.
Yahoo 360 The service's editor lacks the ability to post audio and video clips,
Windows Live Spaces is fine if you don't need high-end features. Its basic editor lets you add photos and embed videos, but you can't upload videos directly from your computer.
The WordPress service provides handy editing tools, including a word counter, and the option to open links in a separate window.
  2. The pictures: http://picasaweb.google.com/ perfect for 1GB of photos. It creates code to paste into the Blog to show slide shows, embedded photos in the blog.
  3. Music Player: for MP3

  4. Video player: youtube.com video.google.com
YouTube Remixer. Your original videos remain unchanged, but the edited versions appear on YouTube. Star in Your Own Video
  5. Social Network
  6. Events Calendar: The agenda format is great http://calendar.google.com/ allows multiple administrators to spread the workload. Allows repeat events. Users can scroll to past and future events if they wish. Individuals can then add their personal calendars and merge them. Even synchronize with Outlook!
  7. Special layout pages: For full control over a page, popup pages, lists, summary sheets, upcomming events calendars, etc. http://pages.google.com/ each author can open a new page, copy from word etc. and paste it retains formatting for tables. Creates a no publicity page. Sadly, only one author only per page group no sharing. Much better looking than http://docs.google.com/ if you can do without shared authorship.

  8. Document storage and group editing of text, spreadsheets, slide shows. The very cool http://docs.google.com/ has limited layout tools (not easy to control tables in word processing mode) but amazing shared work options. Can be used as a for public documents in the website from time to time, but always displays editing tools to the public reader.
    Sample: http://docs.google.com/View?docid=dk7gw3v_0gvv357
  9. Mailing lists: http://groups.google.com/ is ok for lists but hard for beginners to understand. could be used for lists but it's a big leap for outlook users who mail to their contact list.
LiveJournal is designed as a community tool rather than a standard blogging service. For instance, you can join user-created groups and text-message other LiveJournal members. The free Plus service provides 1GB of photo storage.
  10. Statistics: use Google Analytics http://www.google.com/analytics/
Will track multiple domains under one counter!
Exclude yourself from the stats http://www.google.com/analytics/home/admin?rid=795718&vid=1201&scid=3746882 using your IP adress What is my IP?
  11. RSS. Feed Rinse: This freebie lets you enter your RSS subscription URLs singly, or you can import your OPML (Outline Processor Markup Language) file to add them all at once. Then you set up rules for each feed (to block posts that contain a certain objectionable topic or word, for example).
  12. Music publishing
  13. Domain name. If you are running a server on your own PC, use a free DOMAIN to IP redirection service such as DynDNS. Idealy you should use external free hosting and not waste your time running your own web server, unless you really want to learn the technology involved.
