The first computer memory 1951 - a 16 character memory stick.

When too much money chases too few ideas.

It is hard to believe this was the  best idea available at the time. --Lets use sound waves in vats of mercury and build a computer memory around it.  This memory unit can store 16 characters (128 bits of memory). An operating memory filled an entire room.
(ok they did have some valid reasons for using mercury like impedance matching).

But they had a deadline... Predicting the election results. Steve
