What are some of the most mind-blowing facts about China?

Here are some hilights, I enjoyed reading the entire articleQuora is like an unstructured WikipediaSteve

More women than records show
The sex disparity may not be as bad as it seems. There have been many reports that China will have an excess of 30 million males due to the one-child policy enacted in the eighties, causing many parents to abort female fetuses I favor of male ones. However, this does not take into account the many "invisible" girls that have been born despite this policy. China's statistics on their population mainly comes from their "hukou" or residence system. Every newborn needs to be registered soon after birth to ensure that he or she receives the benefits of being a Chinese citizen. Without hukou, it is difficult to go to school, find a job or get married. Since many poor farmers and workers cannot afford the bribes for doctors to determine the sex of a child, most have to wait until birth to know if it's a girl or a boy. If it's a girl, they simply don't register her and try again. In this way, many girls are born before they get the son they want.
In the past, when starvation was a real possibility, female infanticide was much more common. In recent years, while many Chinese families still live in poverty, starvation and survival has not been an issue. Therefore many of these invisible female babies have lived to adulthood, although at a great disadvantage because of their status as invisible citizens.

I've also heard plenty of anecdotal evidence of people going around the one-child policy. My friend was born because her parents obtained a birth permit; her brother had looked sickly during a health check and the doctor decided to give her parents a permit. One friend has a brother because his father managed to get their ethnicity changed to a minority; minority groups in China are allowed two children. And of course if you're wealthy and money is no object, simply pay a fine for your extra children.

They call public restrooms "happy houses" and they are ranked from 1 to 5.  In desperation, I thought I'd try a 1.  I went in and immediately turned around - awful.  Most toilets in the public restrooms are tiled holes, but if you go to the handicapped, it is a real toilet.

 Execution Van
It is a mobile capital punishment. They are expected to be around 40 in number which are in operation. It is allowed to carry out death sentence at remote places without actually moving the prisoner to the execution place.

The prisoner is strapped on a stretcher and his arms are tied. A syringe is put into the arm by a techician and police official administers the injection.China carried out at least 1,718 executions in 2008, three times as many as the rest of the world, according to Amnesty International. Some analysts put the yearly figure closer to 6,000.

Mianzi
Chinese are eager for success or Mianzi (literally "face"). This is the most fundamental driving force of  not only the boom of China but also the unhappiness of Chinese people.
16th century world power

In the 16th century Ming Dynasty, more than half of the silver mined out around the world eventually went to China (thanks go to the Spanish in America...)
The margin for error in population count is equivalent to Australia.
Fact #1: The margin of error for the Chinese population census count is: Australia.  (If you assume about a 1.8 margin of error, then China's estimated 1.35 billion people would be plus or minus 24 million, which is population of Australia.
Genocide
Mao killed 78,000,000 (78 Million) people to establish the Communist rule.  Approximately 6.5 times more people than Adolf Hitler's genocide.
