The end of the Cell Phone?

3G Internet has more coverage than many cell phones and by running Skype (or equivalent) on it you can place calls from your portable device such as the Nokia E71 (about $150 with a 2 year contract) and ignore the cell phone plans.
Here are the numbers. Right now Rogers offers a 500 MB per month package for $37 per month (all taxes in) with a $5 per GB extra download. A Gigabyte is a lot of talk time, my conservative estimate is 5 hours or 300 minutes for only $5! And you can take this up to $100 per month if you must watch HD video and talk.
Cell phone operators are treading carefully here, doing their math. Because the minute Skype and other IP phone operators offer local numbers in Quebec, the rush will be on. Thousands will start dropping their cell phone plans for 3G IP phone plans to reap the benefits.
Compare unlimited calls to US and Canada on Skype at 2.95 per month to 20 cents per minute on your typical cell phone network.
Just letting you know for those Fring lovers that the application is officially compatible with the Nokia E71. Some people have been using a different version but not all the functions were working. Everything is supposed to work fine now according to Fring's blog. Fring is one of the best solutions for Voip on the E71, allowing you to make internet calls using Wifi or your 3g connection. source: Fring Officially Works On The Nokia E71 - New Version Out
