My life reading list 2008.01

Les idiotismes et les proverbes de la conversation anglaise. R. Meadmore. Hachette, Paris. 1918.
I like the organization, although finding something is hit and miss at best. This type of collection begs for a text search engine. Une très bonne idée truffée d'erreures? Many of the lesser known english expressions are incorrect to my ear (90 years later...). Examples:

  1. There's neither sun nor dust abroad = Il fait un temps de demoiselle (p 56 I've never heard either one)
  2. It is raining fast = il pleut beaucoup (never heard of it)
  3. Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones = Celuit qui sème le vent récolte la tempête. (p 68 is glorious!)

Caught by the camera. A Reader's digest collection of humorous photographs.
An exceptional little collection. Thanks JP. My favourites:

  1. 4 guys moving an 18’ sheet of glass in what appears at first glance to be a ballet

  2. some piano factory workers in Mumbai, India delivering a piano to a client (with little more than a rag and a great sense of lockstep rhythm).

La carte postale québécoise. Une aventure photographique. Signatures Plus. Jacques Poitras.
Excellent overview of turn of the 19th century postcards. I love the ones showing places I have lived or been. So many horses! Thanks JP.

National Geographic Magazine. Aug. 1989. The many lives of Old Havana.
So romantic, so NG. Thanks JP.

L'itinéraire. Jan 2008

L'itinéraire. Dec 2007.
Une promotion du Solidaridon. Une bonne idée, plutôt hors de mon champ d'action. Reçue en échange pour un don de 2$.

The new Scientist. Jan 12-18 2008. Excercise your mind.
This UK science magazine takes very quick looks at a wide variety of topics. With interspersed links to additional abstracts, photos and reports it makes for a concice update of the sciences.

Le Canada d'hier. Collection de photographies historiques prises par le personnel de la Commission geologique du Canada. E. Hall. (prêt de Jean-Pierre)
The last Canadian canibal 1897. Sounds more like a survival story.
The Wakeham Bay sealskin canoe photo must be seen!

National Geographic Magazine. Oct. 1984. Iberia's vintage.
Winemaking on the shores of the Duoro. Think Port.

Quo. Nov 2007. (http://www.quo.es/) el saber actual.
Finally something I find interesting to read in spanish. Ok, so I like technology magazines. Jan 2008

WIRED. Jan 2008.
Always a chalenge to read, for the right reasons. It keeps forcing new ideas into my brain with every paragraph read. This month's winner : "Supposedly, electric vehicles emit nothing more than a fine mist of good karma." to remind you that including cradle to grave efficiency numbers puts "efficiency" in a new light.

The article about "Radiohead and the new world of music" by David Byrne. Viral marketing takes on new meaning. Finding a tune on a usb drive in a washroom with a new release. Fake websites. I'm awakened to the notion that fans have unlimited time, numbers and resources to discover clues hidden in spectrographic analysis of the music they are offered to download by the music producers. What a wake up call. The web is nothing like real life.

I'm pleased with the success of the million dollar prize contests to build more fuel efficient cars. Thank you X Prize ecosystem.
